Equestrian Therapy is horseback riding for the disabled children and adults with cerebral palsy, mental retardation, autism, learning disability, stroke and accident victims. The riding exercises aim to build muscle strength, balance and coordination, thus increase joint mobility and perceptual skills.

By combining equestrian techniques with concepts of physical therapy, this creates therapeutic riding for mentally and physically disabled people. Rather than the routine of other therapies, equestrian therapy is practiced in an atmosphere of fun and sport.

The rider learns traditional horsemanship skills to control the horse, thus increasing his or her self-esteem as well as improving their physical abilities. Equestrian Therapy also challenges students in a way they have seldom been challenged before.

The opportunity to lead a horse, to groom and help saddle it, are very real sources of excitement and accomplishment. The natural affinity between people and horses is a powerful way of encouraging the disabled to achieve their full potential.

Almost every disabled person can benefit from therapeutic riding. In less than fifteen minutes a walking horse takes a thousand steps. Each one requires the rider to use their muscles to maintain balance and their mind to control the horse.

Most of the non-profit organizations dedicated to teaching horseback riding to children and adults with physical and mental disabilities are in need of volunteers and cash donations to buy saddles, bridles, horse supplements and other tack items.

It is fascinating to watch the mothers who are almost omnipotent at children football and baseball practices or the little leagues. Some parents can get really competitive and pushed their children really hard. But, most moms are so lovingly provided the support needed without grumblings. They just want their children to have the best and memorable childhood experiences.

Moms have always been a major part of a child’s earliest sport experience, be it baseball and football. Moms are there to “train” them to play the games. They are the ones who pick up the Baseball Gloves, drive them around and to the field, put band-aids on their knees, and console them when they fail.

Many mothers are willing to make this worthwhile investment with their time because they believe the team sport helps in molding character, developing love and trust and help instilling a solid value system. The contribution of this moms is an immeasurable act that leading the cheers and caring for the youngsters of the family. The many hours of getting them to the ball park in time for practice and car pooling to ensure all players got to the game on time can be hectic.

In the midst of the widespread formula milk contamination scandal, may be it’s time for health departments in developing countries to undo the widespread misconception that formula is better than mother’s milk. The branding agencies and Marketing Company hired by this formula milk manufacturers have certainly doing a good job. Many people in Asia are brain washed to believe that formula is better for the babies.

Mothers’ milk has many benefits. Even if you are able to breastfeed for only a short time, your baby’s immune system can benefit from breast milk. Here are many other benefits of breast milk for a mother, her baby and other.

Breast milk is the most complete form of nutrition mother nature provides for infants. A mother’s milk has just the right amount of fat, sugar, water, and protein that is needed for a baby’s growth and development. Most babies find it easier to digest breast milk than they do with formula. As a result, breastfed infants grow exactly the way they should. They tend to gain less unnecessary weight and to be leaner. This may result in being less overweight later in life. Premature babies do better when breastfed compared to premature babies who are fed formula. Researches have shown that breastfed babies score slightly higher on IQ tests, especially babies who were born pre-maturely.

Nursing uses up extra calories, making it easier to lose the pounds of pregnancy, you won’t need any diet pill! It also helps the uterus to get back to its original size and lessens any bleeding a woman may have after giving birth. Breastfeeding, especially exclusive breastfeeding (no supplementing with formula), delays the return of normal ovulation and menstrual cycles, which lowers the risk of breast and ovarian cancers, and possibly the risk of hip fractures and osteoporosis after menopause. Breastfeeding makes your life easier. It saves time and money. You do not have to purchase, measure, and mix formula. There are no bottles to warm in the middle of the night! A mother can give her baby immediate satisfaction by providing her breast milk when her baby is hungry. Breastfeeding requires a mother to take some quiet relaxed time for herself and her baby, that can help a mother to bond with her baby. Physical contact is important to newborns and can help them feel more secure, warm and comforted. Thus, breastfeeding mothers may have increased self-confidence and feelings of closeness and bonding with their infants.

Breastfeeding can save on health care costs because fully breastfed infants typically need fewer sick care visits, prescriptions, and hospitalizations. Thus, breastfeeding contributes to a more productive workforce as parents miss less work to care for sick infants. Furthermore it is better for our environment because there is less trash and plastic waste compared to that produced by formula cans and bottle supplies.

A growing scandal surrounding milk containing melamine, a chemical used to make plastics and fertilizer. In China, thousands of children have developed kidney stones or other illnesses after drinking contaminated baby formula and a few deaths have been blamed on the bad milk. The unscrupulous manufacturers trying to cut costs are believed to have diluted their milk while adding melamine because its high nitrogen content can fool tests aimed at verifying protein levels.

Since the scandal erupted earlier this month, melamine-tainted products have also turned up in an increasing number of Made in China products - from candies to yogurt to rice balls. The list of products caught in the tainted milk scandal grew to include baby cereal, snack foods and vegetables. The woes were the latest blow to China’s troubled manufacturing industry, which came under intense scrutiny last year after melamine and other industrial toxins were found in exports ranging from toothpaste to a pet food ingredient.

This time, the products of some of the international name brands who have their manufacturing plants in China were also cited. It’s probably the busiest time for the Branding managers. Health experts say ingesting a small amount of melamine poses no danger, but in larger doses, the chemical can cause kidney stones and lead to kidney failure. Infants are particularly vulnerable.

Self-esteem is how we feel about ourselves, and our behavior clearly reflects those feelings. The development of a positive self-concept or healthy self-esteem is the major key to the happiness and success of children and teenagers. For example, a child or teen with high self-esteem will be able to: act independently, assume responsibility, take pride in his accomplishments, tolerate frustration, attempt new tasks and challenges, handle positive and negative emotions and offer assistance to others

On the other hand, a child with low self-esteem will avoid trying new things, feel unloved and unwanted, blame others for his own shortcomings, feel, or pretend to feel, emotionally indifferent, unable to tolerate a normal level of frustration, put down his own talents and abilities and be easily influenced.

Parents, are the people who can promote or demote their child’s self-esteem more than anyone else. In fact, most parents do it without even realizing that their words and actions have great impact on how their child or teenager feels about himself.

Children or teenagers make decisions all the time but often are not aware that they are doing so. It’s important that parents help children improve their ability to consciously make wise decisions without being patronizing. Childrem with poor self image may succumb to peer pressure out of desperation to blend in. Some teenagers may resort to take weight loss pills to keep the anorexic look of their pop idols who flank every magazine and entertainment publication.

Our newspaper articles appear with heartbreaking regularity with stories about men and women committing sexual crimes against children. By the time we read about it, the damage is already done, even though the perpetrator may be behind bars.

Early this week, FBI’s Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (SAFE) Team and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Los Angeles, announced that a major investigation had led to the arrest of seven men on charges of possessing and/or distributing images depicting the sexual abuse of children. The arrests were part of a larger investigation that has led to criminal charges against a total of 55 defendants. In this case, the suspects were accessing peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing networks over the Internet to trade graphic images and videos of children being victimized.

Law enforcement agencies at every level should take an aggressive stance against these crimes, paying close attention to those who exploit and abuse children, and make sure the Internet is not an anonymous playground where they can commit their crimes in secret.

Protecting our children from sexual predators, equally as important as protecting them financially i.e. get a life insurance quote and named them as beneficiaries.

But all too quickly came the day when they do not want to use anything with the word ‘Baby’ in the title. Especially if they can read at three years old, this will pose some problems. You can replace baby wipes with travel wipes, but what could you do about shampoo?

Most adult shampoos sting like crazy for children when they get in the eyes. But, no worry, J & J has a vast line of consumer products, the problem can be easily solved with Johnson’s Buddies Easy-comb 2-in-1 Shampoo, with the trademark ‘No more tears, no more tangles’.

Well, every day our children and youth are bombarded with a million different images and voices, everything ads from billboards to internet telling them who they are and influencing them to measure their worth by what they have. The peer pressure and the pressure to be accepted drives them, and perhaps even their parents, to throw money away on things that don’t matter, all in an attempt to be somebody. The result? We are raising a generation that spends money they don’t have to buy things they don’t need to impress people they don’t even like!

Over 80% of undergraduates in America have at least one credit card and nearly 50% of college graduates carry 4 or more credit cards. According to the Department of Education, the average balance carried by these students is more than $3,000!

These statistics show that many children aren’t being taught how to handle money. Many young adults do not know how to read a bank statement nor balance the check book, but they have a checking account or own several credit cards. That’s why we see more young people are making mistakes with many zeros at the end of them. These mistakes often take years to overcome. Teach your children how to handle money while they are young, and they won’t make mistakes later on in life.

Parental involvement is an integral part that helps them in their cognitive development, keeps them motivated, strengthens the parent-child relationship, and has a direct positive influence on their overall academic achievement.

But how do you get involved? Most parents nowadays are busy at work, juggling between work, family and school. It’s not uncommon that an average family has very little quality time to offer and the children spend more time with the tv furniture than with their parents. However, with some careful planning and dedication, you can make it a positive experience for both yourself and your child. You can find out what your child is most passionate about. If you child is passionate about baseball, don’t just get them the Baseball Gloves, you can go for his games or think of contributing your time to volunteer or getting actively involved in his school activities.

In fact, by being involved with your child, it helps you to stay connected with your child. As children who have involved parents are less likely to get into mischief and disciplinary problems in school, or have emotional problems, then you have a win-win situation !

As prices of gas continues to rise and inflation is going on a double digit, many families are probably on a shoestring budget and would settle for domestic or local trips instead of traveling oversea, would get generic instead of expensive Samsonite suitcase or luggage bags. :-)

If you are planning to go somewhere, you’d better start planning right now, look for cheap hotels and discounted entrance tickets online is one way to save money!

Most of us are probably going to do all the advance booking with a credit card. With the gloomy economy roaming around, most of us would try to save a buck here and there. It doesn’t make sense to pay annual fees or subscription fee for a credit card, especially when they are plenty of credit cards no annual fee available. Most of the banks offer some kind of credit cards which you can earn cash rebate, miles and gas rewards, which allow you to accumulate some points for your next trip. If you do not have one that gives you such privilege, check out the Capital One MasterCard!

With most children nowadays prefer watching TV and playing computer games than reading, instilling the love of reading can be a challenging task. Here are some good practices if you are serious about developing reading habits in your children.

First of all, collect and surround your children with good books. Your collection must consist of a variety of books with different themes and with colorful and attractive pictures. Allow them to choose the books they are interested in.

The next thing in developing their love and skills in reading is to read aloud the books of their choice. Other than stories, you can also read a lot of books with facts to draw them into the wonderful world of knowledge and of course to broaden their understanding of the world around them.

As a start, get the children in your life the personalized books. Most children will be excited to read a book that mentioned their names and has personalized story lines!

Being lazy and dumb are the two labels for students with poor grades ever since time immemorial. Parents and sadly many teachers are led to accept these as the reasons for poor academic performance. In actual fact, many children with considerable academic ability fail at subjects in which they should succeed. That’s why one often see on school reports these dreaded stereotyping comments such as ‘Not working to potential’, ‘Lazy’, or worse still, ‘Dumb’ but in disguised terms.

Why they are so many children work below their capacity? Underachieving is not a simple problem and should certainly be a matter of great concern for parents and the education system.

They are two types of situations under achievements are often identified. The first is where children only achieve on occasions when the mood takes them. It seems when an emotional crisis erupts: a relationship breaks up; a family crisis; a personality clash with a teacher, all these can trigger their refusal to work or put themselves forward.

The second situation is potentially much more serious. The child may have many characteristics that give him a label hard to remove. They may become aggressive, giving vent to their frustration by causing trouble or they may become sulky and withdrawn and refuse to develop their talent.

Sadly, over eighty percent of identified underachievers are boys! Studies within the western world’s education and cultural setting even indicated a range of 25-75% among these under achievers are are actually gifted children!

Generally, these children have few long-term problems if they can get immediate help to overcome their difficulty and their progress at school is closely monitored. In the western world, there have started some boarding schools cater the teens with this aim, to help the many underachieving children from fallen victim to the expectations of society and of their families.

They are afraid that homeschooling environment will provide limited interaction, which is detrimental to the growth and development of a child.

Generally, homeschooled children get individual attention thus are more aware of the implications and the purpose of their learning. They are encourage to be inquisitive, trained to ask intelligent questions and make careful and correct observations. They see what what and how their parents conduct themselves, thus begin their life by imitating their parents. In another word, they are protected from the detrimental influences of their peers.

Whereas children are often put into a fiercely competitive environment in public schools, which they are not encouraged to work cooperatively. What kind of social skills are we talking about and what kind of interaction do you get in this kind of environment?

The educational travel components can be thematic or the content can be chronologically arranged, which essentially aim to provide participants with a well-rounded cultural and educational travel experience.

Most school won’t have enough resources to organize such a tour because it takes more effort than arranging a family vacation. You may just make a reservation at Outer Banks rentals for your family vacation and pack your suitcase to go there on the designated date. But, there are a lot more arrangements and planning involved when organizing a vacation or tour for a group of school children. In most cases, it’s better to hire the professional to do the job. They are many companies specialized in organizing educational US tours and educational tours around the world for students. They are more likely to be able to negotiate for a group discount for all the entrance tickets i.e. for a trip to Disney World, getting discount Disney World tickets will save a lot of money! They can also organize the tour according to the precise cultural and educational requirements of your student tour group based on the dates, themes and destinations of your choice, and the specific goals for your educational student tour.

With a home based business, the working hours can be flexible and schedule according to the needs of the family and children.

Other than starting a business, you can also get a job that allows you to stay home. There are many forms of home based jobs. If you are looking at the classifieds for jobs in Boston for instance, you can find jobs that allow you to telecommute, which is essentially moving the office back to home. Or it can be providing customers oriented services that deals with catalog, mail orders, delivery services, etc. It can also be a freelancing job that you essentially work as an independent contractor at home i.e. architect, writer, tutor, etc.

The Internet and modern telecommunication system have make it possible to conduct a lot of business activities without an “office”. Communication through telephone, emails and facsimiles are inexpensive and convenient, they help you to connect with the outside world and customers without stepping out the door!

The children and the parents constitute a family unit. The strength of a family lies in the ties and bondage of love that bind all the members of the family together and feel for each other. It’s important to retain this structure in the world that is getting more volatile and chaotic.

Having a peaceful family life experience and supportive parents who protect them certainly help children to grow into responsible and confident adult with well built personalities and strong character who can bear the rough and tough of life.

Children don’t always remember how many expensive toys you bought them or how many Las Vegas Shows they went to during their last vacation trip to Las Vegas, but they would remember you took time to be together with them and how fun it was to do family together.

Children are innocent and immature, but they are pretty sensitive towards the lack of attention or parents who practice favoritism. As parents, it’s our responsibilities to pay equal attention to all of our children, without discrimination and partiality.

When they are younger, it’s the best time to train them with chores and responsibilities as they usually are eager to help. So do not push them away nor discourage them when they want to help. Help them build basic life skills and they will become more confident once they master them. If your children feel that you are genuinely interested in their lives they will actually feel at home with you and will be more cooperative. They will start talking to you. They will share themselves with you.

Hey, children today have all the luck. Where did we go when we were little children? My teacher took us on a field trip to a shitty little farm where we saw cows and stepped in their shit. Oh my god, I think I hate my childhood. : - )

I jokingly asked her whether her aunt can go along and she didn’t have to think twice before replying “No, it’s for children only!”

Not that I really have time to join the school children to visit to a chocolate factory. But, then, my mind swirled in a vortex of endless free-flowing, creamy Chocolate syrup as it drifted into caramel-flavored, candy-coated, sugar encrusted fantasy factory, whereupon an array of beautifully wrapped chocolate.

Some people believe eating chocolates can cause pimples. I have no idea whether it’s a myth or a truth. But guess you can always use pimple creams to get rid of the pimples if the myth is true! :-)

if you just recently had a baby, congratulations! The arrival of a new child will be a fun, adventurous, and memorable experience. Although work may be the farthest thing from your mind right now, it is something that you may want to take the time to think about. After having a baby, a large number of women wonder whether or not they should return to work.

When it comes to determining if you should return to work after having a baby, there are a number of important factors that you will want to take into consideration. Do you have a lot of consumer debts or getting calls from debt collection agencies. For many women, money is an issue. How is your current financial situation? Before your baby was born, were you relying on one or two incomes? This simple question may play an important role in your decision.

Although money may be an issue for you, when determining if you should return to work after the birth of your child, it is also important to examine the money that you may save. As a parent, you likely wouldn’t send your child to just any daycare center. Unfortunately, daycare providers that come highly rated and recommend often have high fees.

After this comparison, you may find that staying home with your child, after their birth, is actually a cost effective solution. : - )

Although providing the physical needs and affording the cost of living for the children are not easy tasks, the responsibility to keep the kids close to us is even more crucial in today’s world. Children are exposed and have access to all sort information, good or bad, it can get into really dirty situations if parents do not keep an eye on them. The world is full of rotten facts and it is difficult to save your children from all the wrongdoings, it has never been more challenging to keep our children on the right track!

When the children are pre-nursery age, they are generally very honest with their parents and share everything with them. As they grow up, they have their friends and their world start to have a lot more outside influence. It’s the parents’ responsibility to keep an eye on them without invading their privacy and need to be independent.

Teenagers want to be treated with love and respect. They would want to be given some freedom and they are bound to rebel if you keep lots of restraints on them. Be their trusted friend, and keep the line of communication open, so they will understand what they are seeing in the world today, their parents have seen in their youth. With this understanding, they will remain honest and accountable to their parents as they were when they were toddlers.

Children have different needs at different ages, it’s only right that parents treat them according to their age groups. When they are toddlers in the growing age they will be asking a lot of why this and why that questions. When they are teens, they may be troubled with the acne problem. Do not push them away, answer their questions and let them talk to you ! It will be too late to miss this wonderful opportunities that help to create a wonderful relationship and a true bonding between the parents and the children.

It has never been easy to raise a child, what more at this time and age, when traps and temptations are everywhere, ready to devour our innocent children. Children this days are flashed and bombarded with so many messages from all sources that may be contradicted with our belief system.

It may start with a message hidden in their favorite animations or the commercials in between the shows they watch on TV. As they get older and enter the world of internet, it’s another ball game again. Your children will start to receive thousands of spams from sites that promote pornography and illegal drugs, along with promotional emails for cheap Phentermine, one day they will be curious enough to check them out!

It’s impossible to shield them completely from all these. The only thing we can do is to have open communication with our children, hopefully that opens opportunities for stronger parental influence and positive role modeling!

But, if you have children coming along on a New York sightseeing tour. Walking and taking the public transportation may sound a little too much off the beaten path. :-)

New York is a big city, there are many exciting things to do and see. Driving can be nightmare especially when you do not know the roads very well. In fact, you do not have to buy a bus and hire a driver to bring you around. There are many companies offer custom tours and will take you around the city on tour buses. You do want to make sure you book your custom tour with a reliable and reputable company, with honest and good operators. You do not want to end up getting rip off by some of the fly-by-night tour companies. One of the key feature you want to look out for this kind of custom tour is: the tour group is small so that you get personal attention of tour guides who can give you a unique and memorable tour of New York City.

As parents’ work life get hectic, children get busy in their school and after school activities, getting together becomes a privilege, something that is very rare nowadays. Which make it all the more important to get together as a family and do something together during the weekend after a hectic week. Picnic is one of the easiest way to get together without much organization and planning.

You may go to a far away place, spending lots of money on traveling and travel insurance. Or simply going to a park or beach, spreading out sheets or blankets, lay the picnic basket and enjoy being together. A wonderful way to draw your children closer to the nature and to you!!

Most children are messy eaters by nature, but you really do not want to continue to feed them or ignore their needs to be independent. Allowing them to eat by themselves actually is a great training on towards independence and confidence building exercise for the children. After all, there is this amazing stuff called vacuum cleaner! In fact an efficient vacuum cleaner that gets rid of all the pet hair, dust and broken glasses but at the same time keep your carpet in good shape is every household’s super assistant.

Apart from all the fun and exciting rides, some theme parks have aquatic shows and underwater aquariums, which offer fun, excitement and thrills all at once!

If you are parents and you have to work to support your family, you would surely experience the constant tension of spending enough time with your children outside of your work hours!! Undeniably, parenting is more demanding than any full time job because it’s a 24-hour on call job that requires you to stay alert.

That’s why we see more and more parents try to balance work and time with family by choosing to work at home. Many parents work out of home, either running a home business or telecommuting, and take care of children at the same time. This gives more flexibility to plan time between work and family. The parents may fulfill their parental obligations while still making an income to support their family financially. This saves money that otherwise spent on expensive office attires and save all the time that spent on commuting!

The ideal situation is that the work at home parent is able to balance the business time with parenting responsibilities without a loss in income or career opportunity. In some situations, the business activities can be integrated as part of parenting i.e. taking children on business errands, scheduling work when the children are resting.

Many home-based businesses work on a shoe-string budget and really don’t have much allocation for marketing. One of the most inexpensive marketing tools to have is giving out little freebies like personalized pens with contact info of the business. Internet is a great resource where you can start looking into the kind of business or job you can work at home and details on how you can market or advertise your services to potential customers.

With the availability of auto loans that stretch over many years, it’s easy to get new cars with little money down. But, don’t people cringe every time a big portion of their monthly income go into servicing a loan for a car that depreciates in value?

In the 70s, if we are lucky to have parents who own a car, that usually mean squashing the entire family into a Japanese made compact car! We were nonetheless still happy that we were going somewhere in a C-A-R! Not at this time and age! My nephew and niece though are the only two children in the family, often complained and fought for space at the backseat. Children of this generation are spoiled !

A growing child needs a nutritious breakfast that provides the sugar, starch, protein, and fat - elements necessary for children to ensure a sustained release of energy and a delayed onset of hunger. A sensible diet from practicing healthy cooking will ensure the little brain is fueled and the child is able to focus and concentrate on learning better in school, thus develop educationally.

A child who is hungry can be apathetic, disinterested, and irritable when confronted with difficult tasks. This affects the development of non verbal aspects of his growth, socially and emotionally. So, take care of your child’s physical need of hunger, then this can lead to better health, learning, and behavior - all keys to success at school - and in life.

Many of you know I am in the midst of packing and getting ready to move to Illinois, to be reunited with my husband. He is currently busy looking for an apartment for us to move into. Where we are going to live is a small town an hour outside Chicago. We may get to make weekend trips to Chicago once we settle in and check out more information on Chicago travel and interesting places to visit. But, first thing first, we need to find out more about the health insurance!

The big boy is also looking into at his employer-provided health insurance, to figure out whether he could get me on the same plan. If that’s not possible or not comprehensive, we would have to look for an affordable Illinois health care plan. So long one is alive and breathing, it’s so essential to have health insurance. Medical cost is expensive, indeed many bankruptcy and foreclosure cases in America are due to inability to pay the exorbitant medical bills.

Do your children sometime get more interested in the wrapping and the box that comes with gift? So many children just have way too many toys and some just get cast aside minutes after being unwrapped.

Many of the toys available in the market are often too complicated or require assistance to learn how to play them. Some are not developmentally appropriate!

The most important part of selecting the right toy is the age of the child and what are his interests at that particular developmental stage. For instance, if your child is under six months old, things that rattle attract this curious little creature who sees everything brand new. However, you may have to create a game out of them because he doesn’t yet have the motor skills to do much with such a toy!

The second question to ask when selecting a toy is: does it designed to help in developing a certain skill? For younger children, you have to ensure there are no small parts that could become choking hazard. You may notice your child becoming interested in certain activities such as pushing, pulling or sorting items. When you notice your child start focusing on a certain activity, you may want to pull out or purchase a toy that helps develop that skill.

Rotate your toy inventory every few weeks, store up toys that he no longer seems interested in. Store toys that your child no longer seems interested in. Every few weeks, rotate some older toys back into her toy box and you will see your child have a renewed interest in a toy the previously stopped playing with. Reuse the toys for different purposes as your child gets older is a great way to recycle old toys as well.

You not only want to enjoy playtime with your child, hopefully the toys you choose will be fun and encourage proper development in your child as well.

While you think your child looks cute in a pair of vintage sunglasses, there is a need for more awareness of the importance of sun protection! Most people will apply sun tan lotions for a child when he is out in the hot sun, but not many will bother to put him in the UV protective swim wear. Sun burn may cause the most damage, getting a tan after all is essentially cooking one’s skin. The harmless “healthy glows”, deep tans and sunburn can leave permanent mark on the skin and can be harmful indeed. Check out the www.sunsationalstyle.com for UV protective swimwear for your children.

Most parents want the best for their children and would do anything to provide for their children. Even the most carefree singles will start to consider buying a house once they are married and ready to start a family.

They would reconsider their apartment dwelling lifestyle and how it may not be conducive for children who need a lot of space to run about. Most may start out in an apartment, but will eventually do the grown up things - take up Mortgages to buy a single family home, so that their children can grow up in a family friendly environment with lots of space.

The ironic thing is, sometime because of all the financial commitments, parents have to work harder and that takes away a big chunk of time that parents could spend together with their children. Many people are over committed with mortgage on a big house, some may even end up in need of foreclosure help. Guess there has to be a balance somewhere, a big house in the absence of parents do not constitute an ideal home to raise a happy family!

It is good to arrange some after school activities for our children . However, many parents are outsourcing their parental responsibilities and over scheduling their children. Many people around me put their children into too many after school programs or courses, from reading classes, math classes, music classes, language classes, dance classes, … and so many more.

These children are occupied with this so called enrichment classes everyday of the week, sometimes including weekends. They are so busy being chauffered around for various classes, they hardly ever have time to just relax at home. And at night, they’ll be too tired to study for school or just to play with the family. Don’t you feel sad for them? I do, even though these children may think that’s the way life is.

In our current social economic realities, after school programs are a boon to many parents who work full time outside of home. However, many after school programs are just teaching-to-the-test kind of paper mills, some pressurizing kids to do too much too soon. Parents should however restrain themselves from outsourcing all their parental responsibilities to such programs. They are there to give additional support and are complimentary in nature. Therefore, their importance should also be limited.

When a child’s afternoon is filled with classes, tuitions, and other forms of enrichment activities, children do not really get the time to be just children or even being deprived of the cherished family time. Undoubtedly, there are children who felt burdened and stressed with such a demanding schedule loading so heavily on their frail little shoulders.

Don’t we all get asked that question when we are little and then when we were ready to graduate from high school? What was your answer when you were asked that question in elementary school ?

Most children tend to choose what is familiar though some may grow up venture into careers totally different from their experiences. So my point is do you explore the different possibilities of career choices with your children?

It’s not up to us parents or teachers to tell the children that they shouldn’t do this and that. What would you say if your children say they want to be hip hop artists or they want to go to beauty schools to be nails artists or work on Disney cruises? Are you going to frown or say why don’t you try ______ instead?

It’s our responsibility to help our children to figure out what is out there, so spend some good time doing some research and explore the opportunities out there together. We should be glad that they have an idea of what they want to do. Are you glad no one told Charles Shultz that he couldn’t draw dogs and spoiled brats for a living! Then what would we be without Snoopy??!

Joining a drama or acting club will enable your child to able to act out different characters and scenes, it is a terrific outlet for a child with ADHD to learn to manage his emotions. Art and music are also two great ways to help your child express himself.

Children with ADHD have the need to immerse themselves in an activity with intensity, martial arts meet that need because they require intensive mental and physical involvement. On top of that, martial arts also provide clear rules and directions, positive role models, and peer interaction, some of the skills that children especially those with ADHD need to develop.

Scouting has elements that help the child to focus, provide a lot of physical stimulations and has highly structured activities that catered to different learning styles. It’s probably one of the best activities currently available for boys and girls with ADHD. There are consistent peer interaction within close adult supervision, competition, and, most of all, fun, which really make scouting an effective ground for children with ADHD to develop certain life skills that may not come easy otherwise. But, you must have scout leaders who are trained or are willing to work with children who have ADHD.

Swimming which requires physical effort and concentration is also an excellent activity for children with ADHD, furthermore children usually see it as a fun activity.

Baseball, basketball, football, soccer — nearly any team sport that’s highly physical and requires total involvement can be a good choice for your child. Team sports offer him a chance to learn social skills and be around peer models. An individual sport like golf may not be too suitable in that sense. Some more a set of Ping Golf junior set cost more than two hundred bucks. :-) However, make sure he finds a sport he’s really interested in because learning the rules, taking turns, and cooperating with other kids can be difficult.

Though this blog was started last year and have gained a pagerank of 2 for a while, I have resisted doing paid reviews on it for the past half a year. I am not too sure whether I am committing “blogicide” by jumping on the wagon at this time!

Many of my friends on MSN have started to jump off the wagon and quit writing paid posts recently. They have to quit because granny G smacked their blogs and reduced their page ranks to big fat zeros and thus not many opportunities to write about drug rehabilitation or drug rehab anymore.

Do you believe in “no risk no gain”? Is it worth taking the risk of losing the page rank 2 ? We are willing to take the risk because we need the Greebacks. We need a lot of it for the pending move to IL and for the laparoscopic surgery that I will be going through in two weeks time. We also need it to get furniture and fix up the apartment where we are going to share our lives.

Since we are going to spend some of our saving for the surgery, we need to replenish our emergency fund too! It’s always good to have a little more emergency fund to fall back on. We wouldn’t want to get into a financial crisis while we are trying to settle down. I am just grateful that my blogging obsessions that started as a hobby can be a source of income before I get a “real” job.

Watching excessive television especially a lot of violence and advertisements can hurt a child with ADHD. There children are ill-equipped to filter through messages to choose which to pay attention to. Most of all, plugging in the HDMI wall plate and start watching television after school is a passive activity, it takes time away from activities that can help to develop learning skills and social interaction. And from physical activities that children need to grow into healthy adults.

Research shows that video games reduce baseline brain activity in children with ADHD, causing them to continue to seek the reward of doing well in the game to compensate for the diminished dopamine levels in their brains that give them a sense of well-being. This may explain why some children with ADHD often become addicted to video games and have trouble stopping it.

In fact, any game or activity that involves long periods of inactivity, or a long sequence of steps to complete, can be tough for children with ADHD who just don’t have the patience necessary to succeed at these games. Common examples include standing in long lines at amusement parks, complicated card and board games, or physically demanding games where your child is on one of many teams who must wait long periods of time before starting to play.

Are you one of those people who strive to have your floor crumb free, the kitchen sparkling, the bathroom smell heavenly, and the living room free of clutter? The truth is: if you were spending all your time scrubbing toilets and mopping floors, you would be missing out on the precious gift of spending time with your child. Children grow up so quickly, in a blink of an eye, before you know it, your children no longer want to spend time with you!

Do you find it difficult to balance between a clean house and spending time with your children ? If spending time with my child surpasses the cleanest intentions and you have the financial mean, outsourcing the regular cleaning tasks will be one of the solutions. Look into the yellowpages or do a little research online, you would find plenty of part time cleaning services available. You may even find some small business franchise that run franchise maid service in your locality!

However, bear in mind that with small children, your house will never be clean. A quote that I once stumbled upon said “Cleaning the house while children are growing … is like shoveling the driveway before it stops snowing”. See, small children and a clean house are exclusively independent! A spotless home you may not have, but do you know of any parents with adult children who said “How I wished I have spent more time cleaning the house when they were young” ?

Children with ADHD will usually need more time completing homework and household tasks; they may feel like they need to work all the time while other kids get to have fun. So, it’s important to have a balance of work and fun in their lives for their happiness and well being. Do not deny your child fun activities until his work is done. Sign him up for a weekly class or activity and make having some fun a priority in his life.

The best after-school activities for a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) make good use of his time, teach essential life skills, are educational, use surplus energy, are fun, and make him feel good about himself. Activities that are interesting to children with ADHD tend to be fun and meet their needs.

Children with ADHD often see and hear everything equally valuable and deserves the same amount of attention. These children have difficulty isolating single events from all the others in their environment. Many try to compensate for this barrage of stimulation by focusing on the loudest and most exciting. If you watch an ADHD child suft the channels, he will normally stop for the next action packed or attention grabbing comemrcials. Activities that are fast paced and exciting will be fun for them.

A hyperactive child feels driven to keep some part of his body moving all the time, so let him do it! Physical activities are essential to your child’s well being and also help his brain “normalize” in a way that allows him to focus, remain calm, and stay on task.

Parent play an important role in instilling the importance of reading in daily life of their children. The best way to cultivate good reading habit is to start young and to find time to read aloud with your child every day.

Have lap time with picture books and stories, they can strongly motivate your child to enjoy reading. Try to make these books available for your children to explore and enjoy on their own as well. When reading aloud to your child, let your child open the book and turn the pages. Point to the words as you read. Draw attention to repeated phrases, inviting your child to join in each time they occur.

Learning doesn’t have to always be sitting down doing worksheet. One of the ways you can create phonemic awareness in a young child is to make use of printed words he encounters in his daily lives. As you run across letters and words in daily life, make an obvious effort to read aloud signs, billboards, notices, labels on cans, maps, postage tape and phone numbers. You want to say the sound of each letter of the word, for example, say “/b/-/a/-/g/” and then blend the three sounds to create the word. You may also want to draw attention to frequently occurring words as you read the signs with your child and challenge the child to read these words as they arise repeatedly. You can use your regular outings as a way to encourage reading by showing your child how printed words relate to daily living!

Reading is not just identifying letters and words, and “vision” does not just refer to mechanical seeing. If your children struggle with reading, it could be the first hint of a vision problem. In fact, many children who experience frustration with learning to read may have undiagnosed visual problem.

In an early stage, your child learns to attach meaning to what he sees. For example, your child learns to associate the smiley face drawing with his idea of a human face and the feeling of relationship, the smiley face is just lines and dots on a page without such association.

If you see some of this red flags, you should consult a developmental optometrist to find out the potential issues that could interfere your child’s ability to read:

(1) the child cannot associate the shapes he sees with a meaningful idea or memory

(2) some of the mechanical skills that eyes use to collect information are not working quite right

(3) the child doesn’t “see” the same images other children see i.e. he cannot tell the difference between a “d” and a “b” and a “p” and a “q”.

(4) the child cannot consistently “read” from left to right, or he cannot track to the next line on a page.

Some children may merely have fuzzy focus, instead of going out to get a new table lamp, the problem might be corrected with glasses. Some may have mechanical visual issues as a result of the way their eye muscles work independently and/or together. Whereas some children have difficulty reading because they have perception difficulties –what they see does not “mean” the same to them as what other children see.

If your child seems to be having a hard time learning to read, before you further frustrate him with more homework, a trip to a developmental optometrist might be needed. It’s more than just evaluating your child’s performance on the 20/20 eye-chart, a developmental optometrist who understands the development of vision may suggest eye exercises or additional perception training that could make all the difference!

As a child develops along mentally, emotionally, and physically, he is eager to move and explore the ever enlarging environment. But in order to give the child this wonderful freedom to explore, the home environment needs to be prepared with a fine-tooth comb.

Montessori encourages using a floor bed instead of a crib so that the child is free to leave his floor bed to move about the room, and later the other rooms. This is possible only if the environment is child proof i.e. plugs are covered, wires are taped to the wall or floor, no poisonous plants or chemical within reach, any sharp objects that could harm the child are removed.

As the child begins to crawl quickly and to walk, the adults must continue to childproof the house. A 2-foot high gate which can be stepped over by the adult, creates a safe and interesting spaces for the child through the house. At first the gate can be kept at the door of the bedroom. Later, when the child is exploring outside his room, it can be used to protect the child from unsafe rooms i.e. home office, the kitchen, or any other place that is not yet childproofed. The glassware, knives and your favorite paella pan all need to be kept out from the reach of young children.

When a couple are getting ready for the first child, they will be bombarded with so many ads and well meaning friends and relatives on what they “need” for that child. Many of these ads are aimed at selling things that do not provide what is really good for the child.

Many of the items are overstimulating for the young child (too many objects, uncomfortably bright colors), they hamper the natural development of important abilities such as language (pacifiers) and movement (cribs, swings, and high chairs) and even sometimes can be dangerous (walkers and off-gases from plastic).

A simple, natural, and gentle environment that encourages feelings of safety, and encourages the child to communicate with others and to move around—that is the better environment for the child from birth to three. A home theater system, a big plasma TV and home theater sconces may be nice to have. But, listen to the sounds: can you hear the wind in the trees, or are the sounds of nature overwhelmed by the sound of a TV or radio? The child, unable to filter out the unnecessary or the disturbing noises as the adult can, will hear and be affected by every sound and sight! It is important for the child’s sense of order, his security, to keep the environment the same for the first year.
